  • What to run vs zone coverage.
  • What to run vs man coverage.
  • A simple player numbering system.
  • Game-changing situational tips most coaches miss.

General Flag Football Play Calling Tips

1. Always Have a Plan

Don’t call random plays. Script your first 5–10 plays to:

  • Test the defense.
  • Identify coverage.
  • Find mismatches.
  • Install a set core of plays and run them out of different formations.

Sometimes you have to think in “sequences,” not plays. Always have complements to your core plays.

Great play callers think:

  • If this works… what’s next? Do you have an answer or complement play for when the defense commits to stopping a particular core play?
  • How can I make this look the same but attack differently? Run the same plays out of different formations. This allows you to do multiple while keeping things simple for your players.

Example:

  • Run → Fake run → Pass.
  • Short route → Same look → Deep shot.
  • Quick out route→ then Quick Out & Up!

2. Attack Weak Players

Every defense has a weak link. Find it early and go after it:

  • Slow defender → run at them.
  • Poor coverage → isolate them.
  • Always look for the player that has the best matchup.

3. Stay Ahead of the Chains

Avoid 3rd and long:

  • Call high-percentage plays early.
  • Keep your offense in rhythm.
  • Take what the defense gives you! Take advantage of free access.

4. Don’t Get Predictable

If you keep running the same concepts, defenses WILL adjust. Mix up your play calling and be unpredictable. Run the football on pass down and distances and play-action on run down and distances.

4. Attack Leverage and alignment

If the defenders are play off coverage- take the easy throws.

Off Defender Alignment Routes: Slant, Quick-Out / Arrow, Stick, Hitch, Comeback, Fade, and any Double Move routes.

Pressed / Close Defender Alignment Routes: Slant (if DB is playing square), fade / vertical (if DB is playing with inside leverage), Comeback, Dig, Under / Over routes (Drag routes), and any Double Move routes.

What Plays to Call Against Zone

Zone = defenders guarding areas, not players. The best wat to beat zone coverage is to flood it. Regardless what zone coverage the defense is playing, they will only have two zone defenders in each area of the field. When you send three receiving threats at all different levels, the defense can’t cover three receivers with only two zone defenders.

✅ Best Concepts vs Zone:

1. Flood Concepts

  • Overload one side with 3 routes at different depths.
  • Forces defenders to choose.

2. Levels Concept

  • Short + medium + deep routes.
  • Stretches zones vertically.

3. Sit Routes (Holes in Zone)

  • Receivers stop in open space.
  • Easy completions for QB.

4. Quick Game

  • Slants, hitches, outs
  • Get the ball out fast before zones react

Key Coaching Point:

Find grass, not defenders. Teach players to sit in open space.

What Plays to Call Against Man Coverage

Best Concepts vs Man:

1. Crossing Routes / Mesh Concept

  • Hard to defend across the field.
  • Creates natural separation.
  • Allows athletes to stretch the field horizontally.

2. Rub / Pick Plays

  • Legal traffic creates separation.
  • Very effective in short yardage.

3. Motion

  • Forces defense to adjust.
  • Helps identify man coverage.
  • Attack the flat quickly.

4. Go Routes / Deep Shots

  • Beat defenders with speed.
  • Take advantage of mismatches.
  • Press coverage- go vertical.
  • Press or off man coverage- run fade!

Key Coaching Point:

Win your matchup! Have the QB look where you have the best matchup! It’s not so much about the play-it’s about who can get open. My Attack System Playbooks feature several man beating concepts. These playbooks will give you a system of plays that will help you score more points and win more games (playbooks available for 5v5, 6v6, and 7v7).

Simple Player Numbering System

Keep it SIMPLE for players and play calling.

Example (5v5 or 7v7):

  • 1 = Left Outside Receiver
  • 2 = Left Slot
  • 3 = Center / Middle
  • 4 = Right Slot
  • 5 = Right Outside Receiver

We label the receivers from left to right- regardless of the league format. We just assign our players a number and they run the route the number is running on the play diagram. It’s really that simple.

Why This Works:

  • Easy to show.
  • Faster play calls.
  • No confusion.

Bonus Game Changing Tips

Use Motion to Identify Coverage

  • Defender follows = MAN.
  • Defense shifts = ZONE.

Call Your Best Plays More Often

Don’t overthink it! If it works… KEEP RUNNING I

Tempo Wins Games

Mix in:

  • Fast pace (no huddle).
  • Slow it down when needed.
