This is a great concept because it gives the QB an easy read, a quick throw, and the ability to get the ball out fast. It hits quickly, creates easy yards, and still has big-play potential if the defense takes a bad angle or misses a flag pull. The Speed Out Passing Concept is one of my go-to 5v5 flag football plays!

1: Post route- 8 yard stem.
2: Speed out- second step break- get head around quickly.
C: Speed out- second step break- get head around quickly.
3: Slant route- 3 yard stem- press back defender.
QB Read: the QB is reading C to 2. If it’s man coverage the QB can look to the receiver that has the best matchup or leverage advantage (defender playing off man). If it’s zone, hit the receiver between the middle and outside zone defender.

Why the Speed Out Works
The Speed Out works because it puts pressure on the defense right away. The receiver pushes vertical for a few steps, then breaks quickly toward the sideline. When the route is run with good tempo, the defender has very little time to react.
This is especially tough on defenders playing inside leverage. If they are sitting inside to protect against slants, digs, or crossers, the Speed Out gives your receiver space to break outside. The QB sees it, gets the ball out, and now you have an easy throw to the sideline.
It is also a great answer against soft coverage. If the defender is giving too much cushion, take the free yards. Do not overthink it. Catch the snap, throw the out, and make the defense tackle in space.
The Speed Out is one of those simple concepts that every flag football offense should have in the playbook. It is not fancy, but it works. The ball gets out fast, the read is clean for the quarterback, and it gives your receiver a chance to catch the ball in space and make something happen.
In flag football, you do not always need a deep shot or a complicated route combination to move the ball. Sometimes the best play is the one that gets you an easy completion, picks up a few yards, and keeps the offense ahead of schedule. That is exactly what the Speed Out does.
