New! Advanced Attack System Playbook (5v5)

Post-Wheel / Trail

If the defense wants to play man, this concept gives us the answer. This play gives us two great man coverage beaters to each side. We’ll always look to where we have the matchup and / or leverage advantage. Here’s a breakdown of my Post-Wheel / Trail Passing Concept!

The Post-Wheel and Trail Concept is a great passing concept for flag football because it creates natural separation and puts man coverage defenders in conflict. The post route clears space, the wheel route attacks the sideline and vertical grass, and the trail route works underneath as a reliable option for the quarterback.

QB Read: Look for the best matchup. If you’re reading the Trail side (right side) Look 1 (if you like the matchup), then to 2. If you’re reading the left side, work 3 to 4. 5 is the hot and the C replaces any rusher.

1: Fade route.

2: Trail concept- wheel outside, on the fourth step, slice back inside- crossing the face of the defense. You want to cut as soon as the defender turns and runs. It’s a slant with an outside stem.

3: Post route- 8 yard route stem.

4: Wheel route.

5: Swing route (HOT).

C: Quick hitch- 3 yard stem. Replace any rusher.

These are my two favorite man coverage beaters. This is a play I’ve had a ton of success with with my 7on7 and 7v7 flag football teams. It’s a nasty man coverage beater!

This is a core play featured in my 2×2 Attack System Playbook!

This concept is especially effective against man coverage because it forces defenders to chase through traffic, cover multiple levels, and communicate perfectly. It gives your QB an easy progression with a shot play built in, while still having a high-percentage underneath throw if the deep routes are covered. This Post-Wheel / Trail Passing Concept has been really good for me in 7on7 and 7v7 Flag Football.
