Reading Defenses

QB Guide to Reading Defenses

A quarterback’s ability to read the defense is one of the biggest keys to running an efficient passing game. Before the snap, the QB should identify the defensive structure by looking for two safeties, one safety, or no safety, then check the leverage and alignment of the defenders. Are defenders turned in and watching the quarterback, which could indicate zone? Are they squared up on receivers, which could suggest man coverage? Below is an detailed QB Guide to Reading Defenses / Coaching Tips.

How to Read the Defense as a QB:

Reading the defense starts with pre-snap coverage indicators. Below are things your QB needs to look at pre-snap.

1. Start With the Safeties

Two-Safety Look

Usually means the defense may be playing:
Cover 2, Cover 4, or split-field coverage.

QB Thought:
Look for space underneath, seams, and areas between the corner and safety.

Single-Safety Look

Usually means the defense may be playing:
Cover 1 man or Cover 3 zone.

QB Thought:
Identify if defenders are matched up man-to-man or dropping into zones.

No-Safety Look

Usually means pressure, man coverage, or a heavy blitz look.

QB Thought:
